How often should my business post on social media?

"How often should I post on social media?" is a frequently asked question of a lot of business owners. The answers vary. I'd say it's a balancing act. You don't want a decrease in your engagement or bombard people's timeline. You do want an active online presence and attract new customers. So how often should you post? Here are my rules of thumb, applied to several social media outlets:

  • Facebook: max. one post per day, 5 posts per week Research from Hubspot shows that pages with over 10,000 followers were the only ones who benefit from posting more than once a day. Organizations that have less than 10,000 followers actually receive fewer clicks when posting twice (or more) a day. And to top it off, brands that posted only 1-5 times a month saw their engagement nearly double! So make sure you choose quality over quantity.

  • Instagram: min. 3 a week, max. 2 a day Consistency is more important than frequency on Instagram. Your stats can be helpful as well in determining the best frequency.

  • LinkedIn: one per business day LinkedIn is a professional network, so make sure your posts are business-related like industry news, job openings, business updates and offerings.

  • YouTube: consistency is key, so for example one quality video per week Create a posting schedule so your audience knows when to expect a new video. Don't overdo it, set realistic goals.

  • Twitter: between 5-20 times every day The average lifetime of a tweet is between 15-20 minutes. After that, your tweet will get pushed to the bottom.

My recommendations are based on research and advice. Always keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity, and make sure you only start the social media outlets that you can commit to!
